Clinical PsychologistEmily R. Campbell, Psy.D.Regardless of our upbringing, our limitations, or current environment, therapy is meant to be a place where the darkness we’ve been sitting in is met with some measure of light-- where the truth of our pain and suffering is honestly told, faithfully witnessed, and met with the possibilities of new beginnings, some resolution, and peaceful acceptance. In my practice, my aim is to offer a safe place for women, of various backgrounds, to explore their areas of grief, trauma, and relational hurt; their areas of deep regret as well as their areas of deep loneliness and confusion. Together, the goal is to build toward a healthier understanding and narrative of one’s life that leads to tangible growth and change.
When clients are interested and request it, I welcome the opportunity to explore deeper spiritual elements of their journey. This can either look like an exploration of how their faith impacts (or integrates with) their psychological struggles, or it can be an exploration of how a background of religious trauma interacts with their current struggles. This is an optional element clients can request and is therefore not a necessary component of therapy with me. For more information on how I approach this, please see where I write further on this in "Services." My BackgroundI earned my doctoral degree from Wheaton College, just outside Chicago. I was fortunate enough to be trained in a variety of clinical settings, such as: an inpatient psychiatric hospital, a community counseling agency, an elementary school, a nursing home, a civil commitment center, and a maximum-security prison. I have been in private practice, both in Idaho and Nebraska, since 2012, and I have been seeing clients in therapy for 20 years (as of 2025).
I grew up in Omaha and after HS graduation, left to study in Illinois for 10 years. My husband and I met in college and, after some time, we moved out to his neck of the woods in Idaho. We spent several beautiful years there in mountain territory, but when interpersonal tragedy hit that side of the family, we were left unwillingly-estranged from my parents-in-law, and chose to regroup by our then-young children’s other grandparents in Nebraska. Our time in Nebraska has brought much healing to our lives, in more ways than one. My husband is a science fiction/fantasy novelist, writing under the pen name, Kip Terrington, and together, we have two teenage boys. As a family, we have a great affinity for seeing Twenty-One Pilots in concert, vacationing in nature, or, alternatively, at amusement parks. I am an oil painter and I am currently receiving training in Spiritual Direction (a field where one helps another attune to the movement of the Lord in their life). |

INTEGRATING SPIRITUALITY & FAITH
(optional)
|
At times, a client wishes to bring a discussion of their faith into therapy, believing, as I do, that our mind is not simply connected to our body but our spirit as well. I have always, and continue to welcome clients from different faith backgrounds than my own- whether they espouse no faith (atheist or agnostic) but perhaps grew up in one they'd like to discuss, or they follow one of the many religions, faiths, or spiritualities observed in our world. I am eager to explore, together with my client, how their spirit is connecting (or, perhaps, not currently connecting) to their present psychological or relational experience.
There are also times when a client may like to incorporate the processing of religious trauma (either to a current faith or a past one). I recognize for some of my clients, particularly in our context of living in the United States, their religious trauma comes from those who asserted a Christian faith. They were excluded, judged, shamed, or simply shook by the hypocrisies they experienced or witnessed. In identifying as someone from that tradition, that can either hinder or aid any exploration of this trauma. My primary goal is to aid in the processing of trauma and relational wounds, not to change belief systems, and I allow my clients to decide if I feel like a safe presence to explore these issues. These are all optional add-ons, and so therefore not a necessary component of a client’s work with me. |
The Christian Faith
|
For those who happen to walk in the same faith tradition as I do, the one modeled and taught by Jesus of Nazareth, I can offer even more depth of integration, if the client is interested. In 2024, I decided to expand my training expertise and enter a two-year program on Christian spiritual formation. I conceptualize this field to encompass and explore the struggles, barriers, and hurdles one faces in their relationship with God. We say God is love, but does our body, our mind, and our psyche grasp this? Do early attachment wounds or perhaps even the hypocrisies of the church-at-large cloud our ability to see his love or understand how he could even be good?
Many profess a faith divorced from the suffering of their life (or the lives of others), believing that acknowledging the dark somehow discounts or discredits the light. Although I have training in Christian theology, I am not a theology professor, nor a teacher, so I do not approach these issues with “the” answer(s), rather I see myself as a guide, eager to walk alongside on the path, observe the topography, and process what you are experiencing (perhaps even offer new disciplines or practices to deepen your experience). |

Cancellation Policy
|
In order to best serve all of my clients, I ask that you give me or my office a 24-hour advance notice of any cancellations. This allows me to offer the time slot to another client who may be in need of it.
After the second late-cancel (less than 24-hrs notice) or no-show, clients will be assessed a fee and this fee cannot be billed to insurance. The fee is minimal at first, and increases with the frequency of late-cancels/no-shows (2nd and 3rd occurrence incur a $40 fee each, and the 4th and each subsequent occurence incurs a $100 fee). You may notify me or my office of a cancellation by calling (402-885-5090) or emailing ([email protected]). |
Telehealth Sessions
|
A telehealth session is a video conferencing session where the client connects to their provider via a specific (secure) website using their personal computer, smart phone, or tablet. I can only offer this to clients who will either be physically in Nebraska (where I am licensed) when on their device, or in one of the PsyPact States (as I have authorization under the APIT, Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology, and PsyPact Commission).
